Co2 Gas Infusion Unit for Gaseous Co2 Continuously Monitors and Updates Levels, May 2001.
Patented Design Continuously Monitors and Updates the Level of Gas Entrainment
Linden Industries introduced their CO2 Gas Infusion Blending Unit commonly used to entrain gaseous CO2 in Polyurethane resulting in a reduction of chemical use, part weight and improved acoustical properties.
Linden installed three CO2 units in Great Britain for an automotive supplier adding sound insulating foam to automotive floor carpeting. In this particular application, CO2 had two benefits. First, the cost savings from the reduction in chemicals used and secondly reduction in part weight while maintaining the sound dampening characteristics of the foam. According to Mr. Peter Moran of Huntsman Polyurethanes in the U.K., "we were able to get a 15% to 18% lower use of foam".
U.S. divisions of the same automotive supplier also utilize Linden CO2 units for other benefits. Low levels of CO2 are used as a nucleation aid to improve tool wetability, mixing quality, material flow and eliminate surface defects in high density Polyurethanes. The CO2 allows them to mold complex geometries and part configurations that would typically streak, run, or not fill; for example, vertical walls. CO2 is also used to improve foam characteristics, reduce urea formation and is suitable for all types of metering machines and mixing heads.
The Linden Gas Infusion Blending Unit provides a homogeneous dissolution and distribution of CO2 into the Polyol component of the urethane formulation. This provides for minimum consumption of CO2.
The Linden unit can introduce gaseous, instead of liquid, CO2 and does not require sampling to regulate the level of CO2 in the PUR. A patented mechanism continuously monitors and updates the level of CO2, which is more accurate than periodic sampling.
Introduced as a gas, compared to liquid systems, processing is possible with day tank blanket pressures are as low as 40 psi and CO2 tank pressures as low as 100 psi. In addition, CO2 is nonflammable, environmentally friendly, and an abundant natural resource.
The Gas Infusion unit can be provided as a component of new equipment or adapted to existing processing equipment as a stand-alone add-on system.
